How this guide was put together: we research, we haven’t tested these pitchers hands-on. Picks come from each brand’s current performance data sheet, NSF’s and WQA’s public certification directories and our own comparisons (see “Sources”). How we review. Last checked 28 October 2026.

The best water filter pitcher for you depends on what’s in your tap water: chlorine taste, lead from old pipes, PFAS, or simply too many dissolved minerals. A pitcher (or filter jug) is the cheapest way to start, but certified claims vary a lot between brands. Below are five picks, with a plain note on which claims we confirmed in a certifier’s directory and which come only from the maker.

The best water filter pitchers, reviewed

    1. PUR PLUS 11-cup pitcher (PPT111W): best for lead and PFAS on a budget

Best for: Lead and PFAS on a budget.

The PUR PLUS pitcher takes the PPF951K filter, which PUR’s current data sheet lists for lead, Total PFAS, microplastics and several pharmaceuticals, citing IAPMO R&T certification to NSF/ANSI 42, 53 and 401. NSF’s own directory lists the PPF951K for chlorine, taste and odour, zinc and particulates. We couldn’t open IAPMO’s directory, so the lead and PFAS claims are labelled maker claim (the Amazon listing says WQA instead). The trade-off is a short filter life and slower pours.

    • Key specs: 11 cups; PPF951K filter rated 40 gallons (about 2 months); filter change light.
    • Evidence: NSF/ANSI 42 claims: NSF listing. Lead and Total PFAS: maker claim per PUR’s PPF951K data sheet.
    • Good fit if you want the most health claims per pitcher and don’t mind changing filters every couple of months.
    • Skip it if you want a filter you can forget about for months (look at the Brita Elite or Waterdrop), or you buy the basic PUR filter (PPF900Z), which isn’t certified for PFAS.

For a head-to-head on filters, see is PUR really better than Brita?

    2. Brita Large 10-cup Everyday with Elite filter: best for low-fuss everyday use

    Best for: Low-fuss everyday use.

Brita’s Everyday pitcher with the Elite (OB06) filter, the brand’s long-life option. WQA’s Gold Seal directory lists the OB06 in the Everyday (OB46) pitcher for lead, mercury, cadmium, benzene and asbestos, plus Brita’s broader 42/53/401 data sheet. It lasts about six months, so you change filters only twice a year. Brita’s current US data sheet doesn’t include a PFAS claim.

    • Key specs: 10 cups; Elite filter rated 120 gallons (about 6 months); electronic filter indicator.
    • Evidence: WQA Gold Seal listing for OB06 (Everyday OB46 included). Full claims: Brita Elite performance data sheet.
    • Good fit if you want certified lead reduction and better-tasting water with very few filter changes.
    • Skip it if PFAS is your priority (pick the PUR PLUS or ZeroWater), or you buy the Standard Brita filter, which only covers taste, chlorine and a few metals.

    3. ZeroWater 10-cup pitcher: best for high-TDS water

    Best for: High-TDS water.

ZeroWater uses a five-stage ion-exchange filter that strips out almost all dissolved solids, and the pitcher comes with a TDS meter so you can see when the filter is spent (it reads 000 on fresh filtered water). The data sheet for this model (ZP-010) lists PFOA/PFOS, lead, mercury and chromium reduction. The catch: the harder or saltier your tap water, the sooner the filter is used up.

    • Key specs: 10 cups (model ZP-010); filter rated 15 gallons, fewer at high TDS; TDS meter included.
    • Evidence: Maker claim. The ZeroWater performance data sheet for ZP-010 says it’s certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 53. We found no NSF listing and couldn’t open IAPMO’s directory.
    • Good fit if your tap water has high TDS or a mineral taste, or you want to see filter performance with a meter.
    • Skip it if your water is already low in TDS but very hard; you’d be buying many filters. You may also dislike the flat taste of mineral-free water.

    4. Clearly Filtered 10-cup pitcher: best for the longest list of lab-tested claims

Best for: The longest list of lab-tested claims.

Clearly Filtered publishes lab results for hundreds of contaminants, including fluoride, lead, PFAS and microplastics, which is a far longer list than most pitchers. Be clear on what that means: NSF certifies the pitcher only for chlorine taste and odour (NSF/ANSI 42) and lead-free materials (372). The rest is third-party lab testing the brand paid for, not certification, and the brand says it is pursuing more.

    • Key specs: 10 cups (80 fl oz); filter rated 100 gallons (about 4 months); Tritan, BPA-free.
    • Evidence: NSF listing: NSF/ANSI 42 chlorine taste and odour, plus 372. Other claims: maker’s lab data (maker claim).
    • Good fit if you want fluoride reduction from a pitcher and accept lab-tested (not certified) data.
    • Skip it if you want every health claim backed by a certifier listing (pick the Brita Elite for lead).

    5. Waterdrop Chubby 10-cup (PT-04B): best for chlorine taste with a long filter life

Best for: Chlorine taste with a long filter life.

A simple 10-cup pitcher with a wooden handle and a filter rated for 200 gallons. NSF lists the PT-04 pitchers with the WD-PF-01A filters for chlorine reduction plus taste and odour. That makes it a good fit for chlorinated city water that tastes of the pool. Waterdrop also mentions PFOA/PFOS and other reductions from lab testing; those are maker claims. It doesn’t lower TDS.

    • Key specs: 10 cups; filter rated 200 gallons (about 3 months); mechanical filter-life recorder.
    • Evidence: NSF listing: NSF/ANSI 42, chlorine plus taste and odour (WD-PF-01A, 200 gallons). PFOA/PFOS: maker claim.
    • Good fit if your water is safe but tastes of chlorine and you want few filter changes.
    • Skip it if you need lead or PFAS reduction you can verify (pick the Brita Elite or PUR PLUS).

    Didn’t make the cut

    • The Brita Standard filter pitcher: fine for taste, but it’s certified only for chlorine, zinc, cadmium, copper and mercury. The Elite does more and lasts longer.
    • Basic PUR filter (PPF900Z): not certified for PFAS or lead. Get the PUR PLUS filter instead.
    • Gravity “purifier” systems that we couldn’t match to a certifier listing for the model sold on Amazon.

Buying guide: how to choose a water filter pitcher

    1. Start with your water

Check your utility’s annual water quality report (Consumer Confidence Report) or test your water, especially in older homes with lead service lines. Pick the pitcher whose certified claims cover your problem. Filters don’t remove everything; see what do water filters not remove?

    2. Sizing

10–11 cup pitchers suit two to four people. A larger household may prefer a dispenser with a spigot. A bigger pitcher doesn’t mean bigger capacity: the filter’s gallon rating sets how long it lasts, so a household drinking a gallon a day uses a 40-gallon filter in about six weeks.

    3. Certifications explained

    • NSF/ANSI 42: aesthetic effects such as chlorine, taste and odour. Most pitchers have this.
    • NSF/ANSI 53: health contaminants such as lead, mercury, VOCs and PFOA/PFOS or “total PFAS”. This is the one to look for if health is your reason for buying.
    • NSF/ANSI 401: emerging contaminants such as some pharmaceuticals and BPA. NSF/ANSI 58 applies to reverse osmosis, not pitchers. NSF/ANSI 44 is for softeners. NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 is lead-free materials only.
    • Certifiers include NSF, WQA and IAPMO. A claim counts only if the exact filter model is listed for that contaminant, so “tested to NSF standards” isn’t the same thing.

    4. Running costs

With pitchers, the filters cost more over time than the pitcher does. Compare filter changes per year in the table above and check the multi-pack price on Amazon. Long-life filters (Brita Elite, Waterdrop) need the fewest changes. PUR PLUS and especially ZeroWater need the most, and ZeroWater’s count depends on your TDS.

    5. Setup

There’s nothing to install. Soak or flush the filter as the maker says, discard the first pitcher or two, keep the pitcher in the fridge and wash it by hand. Set the filter indicator when you change a filter.

    How we chose

We compared current pitchers from the brands readers ask about most and kept only those whose Amazon listing loads and matches the exact pitcher. For each filter, we checked NSF’s and WQA’s public directories and the brand’s latest performance data sheet. Directory-confirmed claims are linked. Everything else is labelled “maker claim”, even when the brand says an accredited lab certified it, unless we could open the listing. Full method: How we review.

    FAQ

Which water filter pitcher removes PFAS?

Look for a PFOA/PFOS or “total PFAS” claim under NSF/ANSI 53. PUR PLUS (PPF951K) lists Total PFAS and ZeroWater lists PFOA/PFOS on their data sheets, both citing IAPMO, but we couldn’t confirm either in a directory. Brita Elite’s current US data sheet has no PFAS claim. More in is there a water filter that removes forever chemicals?

Which water filter pitcher removes the most contaminants?

By certified claims we could check in a directory, the Brita Elite has the broadest WQA listing of our picks. By published lab data, Clearly Filtered lists the most contaminants, but most of those aren’t certified. ZeroWater removes the most dissolved solids.

Do water filter pitchers really work?

For what they’re certified to do, yes. Chlorine taste is easy, and lead needs an NSF/ANSI 53 claim. They don’t make unsafe water safe, though, and they don’t soften hard water. See do water filters really purify your water?

What’s the best water filter pitcher for hard water?

A standard carbon pitcher won’t soften water. ZeroWater’s ion-exchange filter removes hardness minerals, but filters run out fast in hard water. For whole-house hardness, see best water softeners.

    Is PUR better than Brita?

It depends on the filter. PUR PLUS claims more contaminants, including PFAS, but needs changing about every two months. Brita Elite lasts about six months and is WQA-listed for lead. Full comparison: is PUR really better than Brita?

The best under-sink reverse osmosis systems, reviewed

    1. iSpring RCC7AK-BLK: best for most homes that want certified lead and fluoride reduction

Best for: Most homes that want certified lead and fluoride reduction.

A conventional tank RO system with three pre-filters, a membrane, a carbon polishing filter and an alkaline remineralization stage. What sets it apart is the certification: NSF lists the RCC7AK-BLK under NSF/ANSI 58 for nine claims, which is broader than most systems at this level. It uses standard 10-inch filters, so replacements are easy to find.

    • Key specs: 75 GPD rated; 6 stages incl. alkaline; storage tank; 1-year maker warranty.
    • Evidence: NSF listing: NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS, lead, fluoride, barium, cadmium, copper, chromium, selenium and asbestos. Similar models (RCC7P, RCC7P-AK) aren’t on the listing.
    • Good fit if you’re on city water and want independently verified reduction of lead, fluoride and dissolved solids.
    • Skip it if your main worry is PFAS (it isn’t certified for PFAS) or you have no room for a storage tank.

Read our full iSpring RCC7AK-BLK review.

    2. APEC ROES-PH75: best for people who want simple, standard-size filters

Best for: People who want simple, standard-size filters.

APEC’s long-running tank system with a calcium remineralization stage. It uses common 10-inch filters, and parts are widely stocked. Its certification is narrower than the iSpring’s: WQA lists it under NSF/ANSI 58 for TDS only. The maker’s manual expects at least 40 psi (ideally 50+), and the tank fills only about half way at 40 psi.

    • Key specs: 75 GPD rated (27.9 GPD in certification testing); 6 stages; 40–85 psi.
    • Evidence: WQA Gold Seal listing: NSF/ANSI 58, TDS reduction only; 27.9 GPD certified production rate.
    • Good fit if you want a proven, serviceable system and your water pressure is good.
    • Skip it if you want certified lead or fluoride claims listed by model (pick the iSpring), or your pressure is under 40 psi (you’d need a booster pump).

Read our full APEC ROES-PH75 review.

    3. AquaTru Under Sink: best for PFAS concerns

    Best for: PFAS concerns.

A four-stage under-sink RO system that uses the same twist-in filters as AquaTru’s countertop units, plus a tank sanitizer. AquaTru’s performance data sheet says the system (model ATU100) is certified by IAPMO R&T, including PFOA and PFOS reduction. We couldn’t open IAPMO’s directory to confirm it, so we label it a maker claim. Note that the Amazon listing says “NSF/ANSI 41”. No such drinking-water standard exists, so treat that as a typo and go by the data sheet.

    • Key specs: 54 GPD rated; tank; pre/carbon filter every 6 months, VOC filter every 12, membrane every 24 (maker).
    • Evidence: Maker claim, citing IAPMO R&T: AquaTru Under Sink performance data sheet (54 GPD, 25% efficiency rating).
    • Good fit if PFAS is your main concern and you like tool-free filter changes.
    • Skip it if you want a directory-verified listing you can check yourself, or you want the cheapest possible filters (they’re proprietary).

Read our full AquaTru Under Sink review.

    4. Frizzlife PD600 tankless: best for small cabinets and fast flow

Best for: Small cabinets and fast flow.

A tankless RO system with an electric booster pump, a TDS display and filter-life reminders. With no tank, it takes far less cabinet space and fills a glass quickly. The maker claims a 2:1 pure-to-drain ratio, which wastes less water than older tank systems. The Amazon title mentions several NSF/ANSI standards, but we didn’t find the system in NSF’s NSF/ANSI 58 directory, and the maker describes third-party lab testing rather than a certifier listing.

    • Key specs: 600 GPD rated; tankless; needs power; 2:1 drain ratio (maker).
    • Evidence: Maker claim. No NSF/ANSI 58 listing found for Frizzlife or the PD600 (checked 28 October 2026).
    • Good fit if your sink cabinet is crowded or you fill large pots and jugs often.
    • Skip it if you want a certified system (pick the iSpring) or you have no outlet under the sink.

Read our full Frizzlife PD600 review.

    5. Express Water ROALKUV10M: best for UV plus remineralization in one box

Best for: UV plus remineralization in one box.

A 10-stage tank system that adds a UV lamp and an alkaline mineral stage after the RO membrane, plus a leak-stop detector. It’s a lot of stages for the money, but none of it is listed by a certifier, so the contaminant claims are the maker’s own.

    • Key specs: 100 GPD class; 10 stages incl. UV and alkaline; 4-gallon tank; 1-year warranty.
    • Evidence: Maker claim. No NSF, WQA or IAPMO listing found.
    • Good fit if you want UV and minerals built in, and you’re comfortable relying on maker data.
    • Skip it if you want verified certification, or you don’t want a UV lamp that needs power and periodic replacement.

Read our full Express Water UV RO review.

    6. APEC ROES-PHUV75: best for UV for well water from a known brand

Best for: UV for well water from a known brand.

The UV version of APEC’s ROES-PH75: same filters and calcium stage, plus a UV lamp after the tank. That suits private wells where bacteria are a possibility. One caveat: this model isn’t on APEC’s WQA listing (the non-UV ROES-PH75 is), so its claims are the maker’s.

    • Key specs: 75 GPD rated; 6 stages + UV; storage tank; needs power for UV.
    • Evidence: Maker claim. Not included on APEC’s WQA Gold Seal listing.
    • Good fit if you’re on a well, want UV as an extra layer, and like APEC’s standard filters.
    • Skip it if you’re on chlorinated city water (UV adds little) or you want a directory-verified model.

Read our full APEC Water Systems review.

    Didn’t make the cut

    • Whirlpool WHER25: NSF/ANSI 58 certified for a long list of contaminants, but Amazon showed it as “currently unavailable” when we checked. See our Whirlpool WHER25 review. We’ll reconsider it if it comes back.
    • NU Aqua: our NU Aqua review covers the 5-stage model, but its Amazon link goes to a 7-stage UV version, so we’re fixing that review first.
    • SimPure tankless and other generic tankless units: the listings in our SimPure review were unavailable.
    • Kinetico K5: dealer-installed, not sold as a DIY Amazon purchase. See our Kinetico review.

Buying guide: how to choose an under-sink RO system

    1. Sizing: GPD, tank and pressure

Gallons per day (GPD) ratings are measured under ideal lab conditions. Real output falls with lower water pressure and colder water. A 50–75 GPD tank system covers drinking and cooking for most families. Tankless systems (400–800 GPD) refill a glass faster but need power. Check your pressure: most tank systems want 40+ psi, and a booster pump helps on low-pressure wells.

    2. Certifications explained

    • NSF/ANSI 58 is the reverse osmosis standard. It always covers TDS reduction, and each model’s listing shows any extra claims (lead, fluoride, arsenic, nitrate, cysts). Check the list for your contaminant, not just the standard number.
    • NSF/ANSI 53 covers health contaminants such as lead, VOCs and PFOA/PFOS (now folded in from the former P473 protocol). NSF/ANSI 42 covers chlorine, taste and odour. NSF/ANSI 401 covers emerging contaminants such as some pharmaceuticals.
    • NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 means low-lead materials. It isn’t a performance claim, though some listings blur the two.
    • NSF, WQA and IAPMO are the main accredited certifiers. A claim is verified only if the exact model appears in their directory. “Tested to” or “certified components” isn’t the same thing.

    3. Running costs

Plan on replacing pre- and post-filters about once or twice a year and the membrane every two to four years, more often with hard or high-TDS water. Systems with standard 10-inch filters (iSpring, APEC) let you shop around, while proprietary cartridges (AquaTru, Frizzlife) lock you in. Tank systems send several gallons to drain for every gallon made, and tankless systems with pumps usually waste less. Check the replacement filter set price on Amazon before you buy the system.

    4. Installation

Most DIY installs take an afternoon. You need a cold-water supply valve, a drain saddle on the sink drain, and a hole for the RO faucet (or an existing sprayer hole). The tank sits in the cabinet, and tankless units need an outlet. If you have a water softener, the RO goes after it. Renters may prefer a countertop RO, which needs no drilling.

    How we chose

We started from the under-sink RO systems we’ve already reviewed, kept those whose Amazon listing loads and matches the exact model, and dropped anything unavailable or mismatched. We then checked each model in NSF’s NSF/ANSI 58 directory and WQA’s Gold Seal directory and linked any listing we found. If we couldn’t confirm a claim in a directory, we label it “maker claim”. We weighed certified claims, filter availability, space and power needs, and warranty. Full method: How we review.

    FAQ

    Does reverse osmosis remove PFAS?

RO membranes are among the most effective home options for PFAS, but not every system is certified for it. Look for a PFOA/PFOS or “total PFAS” claim under NSF/ANSI 53 or 58 (formerly P473) on the certifier’s listing for that model. Of our picks, only the AquaTru claims it, and that claim comes from its own data sheet. More in is there a water filter that removes forever chemicals?

Is reverse osmosis water good for you?

RO water is low in minerals, much like distilled water. For most people that’s fine, because minerals mainly come from food. Some prefer a remineralization stage (iSpring AK, APEC PH, AquaTru mineral filter) for taste. See our Frizzlife review for more on remineralization.

Tankless vs tank reverse osmosis: which is better?

Tankless systems save cabinet space, fill a glass faster and usually waste less water, but they need power and often use proprietary filters. Tank systems work without power and use standard filters, but they take more space and flow slows as the tank empties. See our tankless RO review.

Do I need a water softener with reverse osmosis?

Not necessarily. RO handles hardness at one tap, but very hard water (above about 10 gpg) shortens membrane life. If you also want soft water for the whole house, put the softener first. See best water softeners.

How much water does reverse osmosis waste?

It depends on the system and your pressure. Older tank systems can send several gallons to drain per gallon made, and pumped tankless systems claim ratios near 2:1. The efficiency rating on an NSF/ANSI 58 data sheet is the comparable number.

    The best water softeners, reviewed

    1. Fleck 5600SXT 48,000-grain loaded tank (AFWFilters): best for most city-water homes

    Best for: Most city-water homes.

The Fleck 5600SXT is the control valve most installers already know, and AFWFilters sells it here pre-loaded with resin in a polyglass tank. It’s metered: it counts the water you use and regenerates only when the resin is close to spent, which saves salt compared with timer models. Settings such as regeneration time and salt dose are adjustable, and parts are easy to find because so many dealers use the same valve.

    • Key specs: 48,000 grains rated; 8% crosslink resin; metered (demand) regeneration; hardness/iron test kit included.
    • Evidence: Pentair’s 56SXT spec sheet says the valve is WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI 44 and 372. We found no listing for the assembled tank, resin and valve in NSF’s NSF/ANSI 44 directory, so system capacity is a maker claim.
    • Good fit if you have city water, a typical family-size home, and you’re comfortable with a basic plumbing install (or will pay a plumber).
    • Skip it if you have noticeable iron in well water (look at the Iron Pro 2) or you want one certified, assembled system rather than a certified valve.

Read our full Fleck 5600SXT 48k review.

    2. AFWFilters Iron Pro 2 (64,000-grain): best for well water with iron

Best for: Well water with iron.

The Iron Pro 2 pairs the same Fleck 5600SXT metered valve with a fine-mesh resin bed meant to soften water and take out dissolved (clear-water) iron and manganese in one tank. That suits private wells where orange staining is as much of a problem as scale. Iron fouls resin over time, so plan on a resin cleaner and an annual water test.

    • Key specs: 64,000 grains rated; Fleck 5600SXT digital metered valve; maker’s 5-year warranty.
    • Evidence: Maker claim. AFWFilters lists hardness, iron up to 6 ppm and manganese up to 6 ppm; we found no certification listing for the system.
    • Good fit if you’re on a well with hardness plus up to a few ppm of dissolved iron or manganese.
    • Skip it if your iron is already rusty and visible (“red water”) or your well has iron bacteria or sulfur smell; those usually need a dedicated iron filter or oxidizer ahead of any softener.

Read our full AFWFilters Iron Pro 2 review.

    3. EcoPure EP42 (42,000-grain): best for a certified all-in-one cabinet unit

Best for: A certified all-in-one cabinet unit.

The EP42 is a single-cabinet softener (resin and salt in one box) of the kind sold in big-box stores. Its main advantage over many online-only brands: it shows up in NSF’s directory for NSF/ANSI 44, including an efficiency rating, which means the softening and salt-efficiency claims were checked by a certifier. It also learns your usage and adjusts its salt dose.

    • Key specs: 42,000 grains rated; maker lists up to 11 ppm clear-water iron; 1-year full, 3-year electronics, 10-year tank warranty.
    • Evidence: NSF listing: NSF/ANSI 44, hardness reduction and efficiency rated (Water Channel Partners).
    • Good fit if you want an independently certified softener that’s simple to install and takes up little floor space.
    • Skip it if you have very hard water and a large household (a cabinet unit regenerates more often), or you want a standard valve any local installer can service.

Read our full EcoPure EP42 review.

    4. Aquasure Harmony Series 48,000-grain: best for larger homes that want a pre-filter included

Best for: Larger homes that want a pre-filter included.

The Harmony comes with a digital metered control head plus a sediment/carbon pre-filter in the box, so you get a little chlorine and grit reduction ahead of the resin. Aquasure aims it at homes with three to four bathrooms. Its certification story is thinner than the Fleck or EcoPure picks.

    • Key specs: 48,000 grains rated; metered digital head; maker’s 5-year warranty.
    • Evidence: Maker claim. We found no NSF/ANSI 44 listing for Aquasure or the Harmony series.
    • Good fit if you want a bundled pre-filter and a long maker warranty, and you have the space for a two-tank setup.
    • Skip it if you want independent certification (pick the EcoPure or Kenmore) or you’d rather not buy pre-filter cartridges.

Read our full Aquasure Harmony 48k review.

    5. Kenmore 350 (32,000-grain): best for households of 1 to 4 people

Best for: Households of 1 to 4 people.

The Kenmore 350 is a compact cabinet softener sized for one to four people, with a sediment shield, a salt-level display and demand regeneration that adapts to your household’s usage. It’s built by the same company as the EcoPure and is listed in NSF’s NSF/ANSI 44 directory under its model number.

    • Key specs: 32,000 grains rated; 3/4-inch valve; 1-year full, 3-year electronics, 10-year tank warranty.
    • Evidence: NSF listing: NSF/ANSI 44, listed as Kenmore 625.383500 (Water Channel Partners).
    • Good fit if you’re a small to mid-size household on moderately hard water and want a certified, low-fuss unit.
    • Skip it if you have five or more people or very hard water; a 32k unit will regenerate often. Look at a 42k–48k unit instead.

Read our full Kenmore 350 review.

    6. WaterBoss 74011 (22,000-grain): best for small homes and tight spaces

Best for: Small homes and tight spaces.

The WaterBoss is a short, compact cabinet unit with a built-in sediment filter and a small resin bed that regenerates quickly. It suits condos, small houses and utility closets. Amazon lists its part number as 700, and NSF lists the WaterBoss 700 under NSF/ANSI 44.

    • Key specs: 22,000 grains rated; built-in iron/sediment filter (maker claim).
    • Evidence: NSF listing: NSF/ANSI 44 for WaterBoss 700 (matched via Amazon’s part number).
    • Good fit if you’re a one- or two-person household or short on space.
    • Skip it if you’re a large family or have very hard water; it will regenerate often and use more salt per gallon softened than a bigger unit.

Read our full WaterBoss 74011 review.

    7. On The Go portable softener (8,000-grain): best for RVs, boats and renters

Best for: RVs, boats and renters.

A portable tank that connects with hoses, needs no electricity, and regenerates with ordinary table salt poured in through the top. It’s built for RVs and boats, and it also works for renters who can’t plumb in a permanent softener.

    • Key specs: 8,000 grains rated; tank about 6.75 by 22 inches; no power needed.
    • Evidence: Maker claim. No NSF/ANSI 44 listing found.
    • Good fit if you need soft water on the road or somewhere you can’t install a permanent system.
    • Skip it if you want whole-house soft water at home; 8,000 grains goes quickly with a household’s daily use.

Read our full On The Go portable softener review.

    Didn’t make the cut

    • Ivation 40,000-grain: the link in our Ivation review points to a different-capacity listing, and the correct listing was showing as unavailable when we checked.
    • Aquasana SimplySoft, Tier1 and Superior 32,000-grain: still listed, but none showed up in the NSF/ANSI 44 directory, and they don’t cover a need our picks miss. See our Aquasana, Tier1 and Superior reviews.
    • Salt-free “softeners” and electronic descalers aren’t softeners, because they don’t remove hardness. See our salt-free alternative and EDDY descaler reviews.
    • Patriot and VEVOR RV softeners: reasonable, but the On The Go covers the same use.

Buying guide: how to choose a water softener

    1. Test your hardness first

Everything starts with your hardness in grains per gallon (gpg). City water reports usually list it (sometimes in mg/L; divide by 17.1 to get gpg). On a well, use a test kit such as the one in our Varify hardness test kit review, and also test for iron.

    2. Size it: what size water softener do you need?

A common rule of thumb: people × 75 gallons a day × hardness (gpg) = grains removed per day. Add about 4 gpg to your hardness for every ppm of clear-water iron. Then pick a softener that lasts about a week between regenerations at an efficient salt setting.

    • Example: 4 people × 75 × 15 gpg = 4,500 grains a day, or about 31,500 grains a week.
    • Rated capacities (32k, 48k) assume the maximum salt dose. At an efficient, lower dose, a softener delivers roughly two-thirds of its rating, so the example household fits a 48,000-grain unit better than a 32,000.
    • Too small means frequent regenerations and wasted salt and water. Too big can mean resin that rarely regenerates, so many sellers suggest staying close to your calculated need.

    3. Certifications explained

    • NSF/ANSI 44 is the softener standard: it covers hardness reduction, material safety, structural integrity and, optionally, a salt-efficiency rating. It’s the one that matters here.
    • NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 covers low-lead materials only. It says nothing about softening.
    • NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58 and 401 are drinking-water filter standards (taste and chlorine, health contaminants such as lead, reverse osmosis, and emerging contaminants). A softener isn’t certified under these, so don’t expect a softener to remove lead, PFAS or nitrates.
    • Watch the wording. “Certified valve” or “certified components” isn’t the same as a certified system. Look the model up yourself in the NSF directory or the WQA Gold Seal directory.

    4. Running costs

Salt is the main ongoing cost. How much you use depends on your hardness, your household and the salt-dose setting, and metered (demand) valves use less than timer valves. Resin usually lasts many years on city water but can wear out faster with chlorine or iron. Add cartridge changes if your unit has a pre-filter, and resin cleaner if you have iron. Our are water softeners worth it? guide goes through the trade-offs.

    5. Installation

Whole-house softeners go on the main line after the pressure tank (on a well) and before the water heater. They need a drain for regeneration water, a standard power outlet (except portable units) and a bypass valve. Many people leave an outside tap unsoftened. If you’ve never soldered or used push-fit fittings, budget for a plumber, and check local rules, since some areas restrict brine discharge.

    How we chose

We started from the softeners we’ve already reviewed and kept only those whose Amazon listing still loads and matches the exact product. Then we checked each model in NSF’s NSF/ANSI 44 directory, and where a listing exists, we link to it. Anything we couldn’t confirm in a certifier’s directory is labelled “maker claim”. We weighed the fit for a specific household, valve type (metered beats timer), parts and service availability, and warranty. We don’t accept free products. Full method: How we review.

    FAQ

What size water softener do I need for a family of 4?

Multiply 4 people × 75 gallons × your hardness in gpg. At 10 gpg that’s about 3,000 grains a day (around 21,000 a week), so a 32,000-grain unit works. At 15–20 gpg, look at 40,000–48,000 grains. Add about 4 gpg for each ppm of iron.

Is a salt-free water softener better than a salt-based one?

Salt-free “conditioners” (TAC/NAC media) change how hardness minerals form scale but don’t remove them, so you won’t get the slippery feel of soft water or the soap savings. They’re a reasonable choice where brine discharge is banned or for moderate scale. If you want truly soft water, you need an ion-exchange softener. See our salt-free alternative review.

Water softener vs reverse osmosis: do I need both?

They do different jobs. A softener removes hardness for the whole house. An under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system cleans drinking water at one tap, including lead, nitrate and, with the right certification, PFAS. Softeners don’t remove PFAS. When you have both, the RO goes after the softener, and soft water helps the RO membrane last longer. See our best under-sink reverse osmosis systems.

Is softened water safe to drink?

For most people, yes. A softener adds a small amount of sodium that rises with your hardness. If you’re on a low-sodium diet, use potassium chloride instead of salt, or drink from an RO tap. More in is it healthy to drink softened water? and how to remove sodium from softened water.

Can I put a water softener in an apartment?

Usually not a plumbed-in one without the landlord’s permission. A portable unit like the On The Go that connects with hoses, or a filtering shower head, is the renter-friendly option.

  • AquaTru Under Sink Review: What Its IAPMO Certification Covers (Lead, PFAS, Microplastics)

AquaTru Under Sink Review: What Its IAPMO Certification Covers (Lead, PFAS, Microplastics)

This page contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate, Filtered Water Wise earns from qualifying purchases. Affiliate disclosure.

How this review was put together: from AquaTru’s performance data sheet and the Under Sink owner’s manual (links in “Sources” at the end), checked against the NSF/ANSI standards they cite. We have not tested this system ourselves. How we review. Last checked 28 October 2026.

    The short version

The AquaTru Under Sink is a compact under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system with a small holding tank, three twist-in cartridges (AquaTru counts four stages, because the first cartridge combines sediment and carbon), a dedicated faucet, and an electronic module that tracks filter life and shuts off the water if its leak sensor gets wet. It runs on house pressure; the electronics run on three AA batteries.

What sets it apart is how much of its contaminant list is certified rather than just claimed. AquaTru’s performance data sheet says the system is certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, 372 and 401 and to NSF Protocol P473, with certified claims for lead, fluoride, arsenic (pentavalent), chromium, nitrate/nitrite, PFOA/PFOS, microplastics and a long list of VOCs. The trade-offs: a hard-water limit of 10 grains per gallon, slower production than bigger tank systems, and proprietary filters.

See the AquaTru Under Sink on Amazon

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

    A good fit if you

    • Want certified lead, fluoride or PFOA/PFOS reduction at the kitchen tap, not just a marketing list.
    • Are on city water with hardness at or below 10 grains per gallon (about 171 mg/L), or already have a water softener.
    • Like a leak sensor that shuts off the supply, and filter-change reminders, under the sink.
    • Prefer quick twist-in cartridges over unscrewing housings with a wrench.

Probably not the right pick if you

    • Have hard water above 10 gpg and no softener. AquaTru says scale will build up quickly on the membrane and does not recommend it unless the water is softened first. Check your utility’s water quality report, or test it.
    • Need a lot of RO water quickly (big families, filling large pots, a fridge and ice maker on the same line). The certified daily production is 54 gallons per day, and the tank is small.
    • Want generic, standard-size filters you can buy from many brands. AquaTru’s cartridges are proprietary.
    • Rent or can’t drill. AquaTru’s countertop purifier (a different product) needs no plumbing.

    Key specifications

From AquaTru’s performance data sheet and the Under Sink owner’s manual.

Spec AquaTru Under Sink What it means in practice
Type Under-sink RO with holding tank, no pump Runs on house pressure. Batteries power only the alerts and leak shut-off.
Cartridges Pre-filter (sediment + carbon), RO membrane, VOC carbon filter (or VOC carbon with “pH+ Mineral Boost”) Three twist-in cartridges, no housings to unscrew.
Daily production rate 54 gallons per day Certified test figure. Plenty for drinking and cooking for most homes, less than larger tank systems.
Efficiency rating 25% Under typical-use test conditions, about 1 gallon in 4 that enters the system ends up as drinking water; the rest goes to the drain.
Recovery rating 50% Membrane-only figure with the tank bypassed. The efficiency rating is the more realistic number.
    Feed pressure 40–85 psi
Feed water temperature 40–100°F, cold line only
Max hardness 10 gpg (171 mg/L) The limit most likely to rule it out. Soften first if you are above it.
Max feed TDS 1,500 mg/L Lower than some RO units rated to 2,000.
Iron, manganese, sulfide Under 0.1 mg/L Well water with iron needs treating before RO.
Power 3 AA batteries For filter-life tracking and leak alerts. No outlet needed.
Warranty 1-year limited (owner’s manual) Filters are not covered.

    Certification: what was verified

Status: certified by IAPMO R&T, per AquaTru’s documents. AquaTru’s performance data sheet states the system is certified by IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 42, 53, 58, 372 and 401 and to NSF Protocol P473, “for the reduction of the claims specified.” IAPMO R&T is an ANSI-accredited certifier, so its listing counts the same as an NSF International or WQA listing. We found no NSF International listing for AquaTru, which is expected. Note the model numbers: the data sheet names model ATU100, and the current manual names ATU200.

The certified claims on the data sheet, grouped by standard:

    Standard What it covers here
NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) TDS, lead, fluoride, arsenic (pentavalent), barium, copper, hexavalent and trivalent chromium, nitrate/nitrite, perchlorate, radium 226/228, selenium
NSF/ANSI 53 (health effects) A long list of VOCs, pesticides and disinfection by-products, including trihalomethanes, by surrogate testing
NSF/ANSI 42 (aesthetic) Chlorine, chloramine, and fine particulates
NSF/ANSI 401 (emerging compounds) 15 trace compounds, including some pharmaceuticals, BPA and DEET, plus microplastics (0.5–1 µm particles)
NSF Protocol P473 PFOA and PFOS (combined)
NSF/ANSI 372 Lead content of the materials (not a reduction claim)

What that does and doesn’t tell you:

    • It does confirm the claims most people buy RO for: lead, fluoride, arsenic (V), nitrate and PFOA/PFOS. That is a broader certified list than many online RO systems, which often certify TDS only.
    • The TDS figure is modest for RO. The data sheet shows 75.7% minimum and 87.1% average TDS reduction in the test. That passes the standard, but it is lower than some conventional RO systems (the Whirlpool WHER25 lists about 90% average). If you judge RO by a TDS meter, expect readings that aren’t near zero.
    • Arsenic needs care. The arsenic claim is for pentavalent arsenic only. If you are on a well with arsenic, AquaTru’s own “Arsenic Facts” section explains how to check which form you have.
    • “P473” is a protocol, not the newer PFAS standard. It covers PFOA and PFOS specifically, not every PFAS. See is there a water filter that removes forever chemicals?
    • Like every RO system, it is not meant for water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality.

What we like and what to weigh up

    Strengths

    • Broad certified claim list, including PFOA/PFOS and microplastics, all from one certifier.
    • Leak protection. An automatic shut-off leak detector cuts the supply if it gets wet. The manual warns it only works if the filter manifold sits flat and level.
    • Twist-in filters with reminders, by audible alarm, indicator lights or the AquaTru app.
    • No outlet needed under the sink, because the electronics run on batteries.
    • A holding-tank sanitizer fitting (AquaTru calls it TruPure) is included, and the manual has a routine for sanitizing the tank when you change the VOC filter.

    Drawbacks

    • The 10 gpg hardness limit. Many US homes, especially on well water, have water harder than that. Factor in a softener if you need one.
    • Proprietary cartridges, so you depend on AquaTru for replacements.
    • Waste water. A 25% efficiency rating means roughly three gallons to the drain for every gallon you drink, typical for a tank RO system without a pump.
    • Modest TDS reduction compared with some other RO systems (see above).
    • Short base warranty: one year in the manual.

    Maintenance and running costs

AquaTru’s replacement schedule (whichever comes first):

    Cartridge Replace Note
Pre-filter (sediment + carbon) Every 6 months The data sheet says 600 gallons, the ATU200 manual says 360 gallons. Go by the alert or 6 months.
RO membrane Every 24 months or 1,200 gallons The arsenic claim depends on replacing it on time.
VOC filter (or VOC with pH+ Mineral Boost) Every 12 months or 360 gallons AquaTru suggests sanitizing the holding tank at the same time.
AA batteries When the battery light blinks The leak alerts and filter tracking stop working without them.

What drives the cost: the twice-yearly pre-filter and yearly VOC filter are the regular spend; the membrane comes round every two years. Because the cartridges are proprietary, compare the current price of a full year of AquaTru filters against standard-size systems before you buy. Prices change often, so we don’t quote them here.

    Alternatives worth comparing

    • Hard water and want a big-box brand with an NSF listing? The Whirlpool WHER25 is NSF-listed under NSF/ANSI 58 for lead, fluoride, arsenic (V), cysts and more, also with a 10 gpg hardness limit.
    • Want generic 10-inch filters? The APEC ROES-PH75 uses standard housings, though its WQA certification covers TDS only.
    • Want a broad NSF-listed claim set and standard housings? See the iSpring RCC7AK-BLK.
    • Want faster flow and less waste? A tankless unit such as the Frizzlife PD600 needs an outlet, and read our notes on its certification claims.

Does the AquaTru Under Sink remove PFAS?

It carries a certified claim for PFOA and PFOS under NSF Protocol P473, according to AquaTru’s data sheet. RO is also one of the treatment types the EPA says can greatly reduce PFAS. That claim covers PFOA and PFOS, not every PFAS compound.

Is the AquaTru Under Sink the same as the AquaTru countertop purifier?

No. The countertop AquaTru is a plug-in unit you fill by hand. The Under Sink connects to your cold water line and drain and feeds a dedicated faucet. They use different filters.

Will it take the sodium out of softened water?

RO is the usual way to reduce sodium at the drinking tap after a softener, and with a softener upstream the 10 gpg hardness limit stops being a problem. See how to remove sodium from softened water.

    Does it add minerals back?

Only if you use the “VOC Carbon with pH+ Mineral Boost” cartridge in place of the standard VOC filter. AquaTru doesn’t publish an output pH or mineral level.
