AquaTru Under Sink Review: What Its IAPMO R&T Certification Covers (Lead, PFOA/PFOS, Microplastics)

How this review was put together: from AquaTru’s performance data sheet and the Under Sink owner’s manual (links in “Sources” at the end), checked against IAPMO R&T’s certification listings. We have not tested this system ourselves. How we review. Last checked October 28, 2026.

    The short version

The AquaTru Under Sink is a compact under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system with a small holding tank, three twist-in cartridges (AquaTru counts four stages, because the first cartridge combines sediment and carbon), a dedicated faucet, and an electronic module that tracks filter life and shuts off the water if its leak sensor gets wet. It runs on house pressure; the electronics run on three AA batteries.

What sets it apart is how much of its contaminant list is certified rather than just claimed. The certifier is IAPMO R&T, not NSF International. IAPMO R&T lists the Under Sink (models ATU100/ATU200) under NSF/ANSI 58 (file W-10194) for TDS, lead, fluoride, arsenic (pentavalent), nitrate/nitrite and other contaminants; under NSF/ANSI 53 (file W-10193) for VOCs and PFOA/PFOS; and under NSF/ANSI 401 (file W-10195) for listed emerging compounds, including microplastics. The trade-offs: a hard-water limit of 10 grains per gallon, slower production than bigger tank systems, and proprietary filters.

See the AquaTru Under Sink on Amazon

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

    A good fit if you

    • Want certified lead, fluoride or PFOA/PFOS reduction at the kitchen tap, not just a marketing list.
    • Are on city water with hardness at or below 10 grains per gallon (about 171 mg/L), or already have a water softener.
    • Like a leak sensor that shuts off the supply, and filter-change reminders, under the sink.
    • Prefer quick twist-in cartridges over unscrewing housings with a wrench.

Probably not the right pick if you

    • Have hard water above 10 gpg and no softener. AquaTru says scale will build up quickly on the membrane and does not recommend it unless the water is softened first. Check your utility’s water quality report, or test it.
    • Need a lot of RO water quickly (big families, filling large pots, a fridge and ice maker on the same line). The certified daily production is 54 gallons per day, and the tank is small.
    • Want generic, standard-size filters you can buy from many brands. AquaTru’s cartridges are proprietary.
    • Rent or can’t drill. AquaTru’s countertop purifier (a different product) needs no plumbing.

    Key specifications

From AquaTru’s performance data sheet and the Under Sink owner’s manual.

Spec AquaTru Under Sink What it means in practice
Type Under-sink RO with holding tank, no pump Runs on house pressure. Batteries power only the alerts and leak shut-off.
Cartridges Pre-filter (sediment + carbon), RO membrane, VOC carbon filter (or VOC carbon with “pH+ Mineral Boost”) Three twist-in cartridges, no housings to unscrew.
Daily production rate 54 gallons per day Certified test figure. Plenty for drinking and cooking for most homes, less than larger tank systems.
Efficiency rating 25% Under typical-use test conditions, about 1 gallon in 4 that enters the system ends up as drinking water; the rest goes to the drain.
Recovery rating 50% Membrane-only figure with the tank bypassed. The efficiency rating is the more realistic number.
    Feed pressure 40–85 psi
Feed water temperature 40–100°F, cold line only
Max hardness 10 gpg (171 mg/L) The limit most likely to rule it out. Soften first if you are above it.
Max feed TDS 1,500 mg/L Lower than some RO units rated to 2,000.
Iron, manganese, sulfide Under 0.1 mg/L Well water with iron needs treating before RO.
Power 3 AA batteries For filter-life tracking and leak alerts. No outlet needed.
Warranty 1-year limited (owner’s manual) Filters are not covered.

    Certification: what was verified

Status: certified by IAPMO R&T (not NSF International), confirmed in IAPMO R&T’s listings on October 28, 2026. IAPMO R&T is an ANSI-accredited certifier, so its listing counts the same as an NSF International or WQA listing. AquaTru has no NSF International listing, so “NSF certified” would be wrong. The Under Sink appears in the IAPMO R&T files as models ATU100 and ATU200 (the data sheet names the ATU100 and the current manual names the ATU200).

What each IAPMO R&T file covers for the Under Sink (ATU100/ATU200):

IAPMO R&T file Standard Under Sink claims on the listing
W-10194 NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis) TDS, lead, fluoride, arsenic (pentavalent), barium, chromium, copper, cysts, nitrate/nitrite, radium 226/228, selenium. The ATU200 listing adds uranium; the ATU100 listing adds perchlorate. Rated 54 gallons per day.
W-10193 NSF/ANSI 53 (health effects) VOCs, PFOA and PFOS, at a 360-gallon capacity. No lead claim under NSF/ANSI 53 for the Under Sink; its lead claim is under NSF/ANSI 58.
W-10195 NSF/ANSI 401 (emerging compounds) Listed emerging compounds, including some pharmaceuticals, BPA and microplastics.

AquaTru’s data sheet also cites NSF/ANSI 42 (chlorine, chloramine and particulates) and NSF/ANSI 372 (lead-free materials, not a reduction claim). We have not checked those two IAPMO R&T listings model by model, so treat them as maker-stated.

What that does and doesn’t tell you:

    • It does confirm the claims most people buy RO for: lead, fluoride, arsenic (V) and nitrate under NSF/ANSI 58, and PFOA/PFOS under NSF/ANSI 53. That is a broader certified list than many online RO systems, which often certify TDS only.
    • The TDS figure is modest for RO. The data sheet shows 75.7% minimum and 87.1% average TDS reduction in the test. That passes the standard, but it is lower than some conventional RO systems (the Whirlpool WHER25 lists about 90% average). If you judge RO by a TDS meter, expect readings that aren’t near zero.
    • Arsenic needs care. The arsenic claim is for pentavalent arsenic only. If you are on a well with arsenic, AquaTru’s own “Arsenic Facts” section explains how to check which form you have.
    • PFOA/PFOS only, not every PFAS. IAPMO R&T lists the PFOA/PFOS claim under NSF/ANSI 53 (file W-10193); AquaTru’s data sheet refers to the NSF P473 test protocol. Either way it covers PFOA and PFOS specifically, not every PFAS. See is there a water filter that removes forever chemicals?
    • Like every RO system, it is not meant for water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality.

What we like and what to weigh up

    Strengths

    • Broad certified claim list, including PFOA/PFOS (NSF/ANSI 53) and microplastics (NSF/ANSI 401), all from one certifier, IAPMO R&T.
    • Leak protection. An automatic shut-off leak detector cuts the supply if it gets wet. The manual warns it only works if the filter manifold sits flat and level.
    • Twist-in filters with reminders, by audible alarm, indicator lights or the AquaTru app.
    • No outlet needed under the sink, because the electronics run on batteries.
    • A holding-tank sanitizer fitting (AquaTru calls it TruPure) is included, and the manual has a routine for sanitizing the tank when you change the VOC filter.

    Drawbacks

    • The 10 gpg hardness limit. Many US homes, especially on well water, have water harder than that. Factor in a softener if you need one.
    • Proprietary cartridges, so you depend on AquaTru for replacements.
    • Waste water. A 25% efficiency rating means roughly three gallons to the drain for every gallon you drink, typical for a tank RO system without a pump.
    • Modest TDS reduction compared with some other RO systems (see above).
    • Short base warranty: one year in the manual.

    Maintenance and running costs

AquaTru’s replacement schedule (whichever comes first):

    Cartridge Replace Note
Pre-filter (sediment + carbon) Every 6 months The data sheet says 600 gallons, the ATU200 manual says 360 gallons. Go by the alert or 6 months.
RO membrane Every 24 months or 1,200 gallons The arsenic claim depends on replacing it on time.
VOC filter (or VOC with pH+ Mineral Boost) Every 12 months or 360 gallons AquaTru suggests sanitizing the holding tank at the same time.
AA batteries When the battery light blinks The leak alerts and filter tracking stop working without them.

What drives the cost: the twice-yearly pre-filter and yearly VOC filter are the regular spend; the membrane comes round every two years. Because the cartridges are proprietary, compare the current price of a full year of AquaTru filters against standard-size systems before you buy. Prices change often, so we don’t quote them here.

    Alternatives worth comparing

    • Hard water and want a big-box brand with an NSF listing? The Whirlpool WHER25 is NSF-listed under NSF/ANSI 58 for lead, fluoride, arsenic (V), cysts and more, also with a 10 gpg hardness limit.
    • Want generic 10-inch filters? The APEC ROES-PH75 uses standard housings, though its WQA certification covers TDS only.
    • Want a broad NSF-listed claim set and standard housings? See the iSpring RCC7AK-BLK.
    • Want faster flow and less waste? A tankless unit such as the Frizzlife PD600 needs an outlet, and read our notes on its certification claims.
    • Comparing them all: see our best under-sink reverse osmosis systems guide.

    Common questions

Does the AquaTru Under Sink remove PFAS?

IAPMO R&T lists PFOA and PFOS reduction for the Under Sink (ATU100/ATU200) under NSF/ANSI 53 (file W-10193). RO is also one of the treatment types the EPA says can greatly reduce PFAS. That claim covers PFOA and PFOS, not every PFAS compound.

Is the AquaTru Under Sink the same as the AquaTru countertop purifier?

No. The countertop AquaTru is a plug-in unit you fill by hand. The Under Sink connects to your cold water line and drain and feeds a dedicated faucet. They use different filters.

Will it take the sodium out of softened water?

RO is the usual way to reduce sodium at the drinking tap after a softener, and with a softener upstream the 10 gpg hardness limit stops being a problem. See how to remove sodium from softened water.

    Does it add minerals back?

Only if you use the “VOC Carbon with pH+ Mineral Boost” cartridge in place of the standard VOC filter. AquaTru doesn’t publish an output pH or mineral level.

Have you ever wondered which water filtration brand reigns supreme between Pur and Brita? Well, the never-ending debate of “Is Pur really better than Brita?” continues to captivate curious minds. Both brands claim to provide clean, filtered water, but which one truly delivers on its promises? In this article, we will explore the key differences and similarities between Pur and Brita, helping you make an informed decision about which brand is best suited for your hydration needs. So, let’s dive into the world of water filtration and find out if Pur really surpasses Brita in quality and performance.

    Price

    Initial Cost

When considering the price of a water filter, it’s important to look at both the initial cost and the long-term cost. In terms of the initial cost, Pur and Brita filters are fairly comparable. Both brands offer a range of options with varying prices, so you can choose one that fits your budget. Whether you opt for a basic model or a more advanced filter, both Pur and Brita provide affordable options to ensure access to clean drinking water without breaking the bank.

    Replacement Filter Cost

In terms of ongoing maintenance, the cost of replacement filters is another factor to consider. Both Pur and Brita filters require regular filter changes to maintain their effectiveness. It’s worth noting that the frequency of filter replacement may differ between the two brands, thus affecting the long-term cost.

    Long-term Cost

Determining the long-term cost of a water filter depends on various factors such as filter lifespan and replacement frequency. While the initial and replacement filter costs may be similar between Pur and Brita, the long-term cost may vary based on these factors. It’s crucial to consider the specific model you choose and the duration between filter changes to get a clear understanding of the long-term cost. Evaluating your household’s water consumption and the expected lifespan of the filters will help you make an informed decision on which brand offers better long-term value.

    Filtration Performance

    Contaminant Removal

When it comes to contaminated substances in water, both Pur and Brita are designed to effectively remove common impurities such as chlorine, lead, mercury, and pesticides. Both brands use activated carbon filters to absorb these contaminants and provide cleaner, safer drinking water. While their filtration performance is relatively similar, Pur has an additional feature known as the Maxion technology, which combines activated carbon with ion exchange to remove more contaminants compared to regular activated carbon filters.

    Taste and Odor

One of the essential considerations when choosing a water filter is the improvement of taste and odor. Pur and Brita filters both excel in this aspect by reducing the unpleasant taste and odor associated with tap water. Thanks to their advanced filtration systems, these brands can eliminate the chlorine taste and any other lingering flavors, providing you with refreshing and great-tasting water that even rivals bottled water.

    Certifications

Both Pur and Brita have undergone rigorous testing and received certifications that confirm their effectiveness in contaminant removal. Many PUR filters are listed by NSF International: for example, NSF lists PUR faucet-mount systems under NSF/ANSI 53 for lead, mercury and VOC reduction, and the PPF951K pitcher filter under NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine, taste and odor (NSF listing, checked October 28, 2026). Brita pitchers are certified by the Water Quality Association (WQA Gold Seal): for example, the Everyday pitcher (OB46) with the Standard (OB03) or Elite (OB06) filter is listed under NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine, taste and odor (WQA listing, checked October 28, 2026). Claims differ by filter, so check the listing for the exact filter you plan to buy.

Whether you live alone, with a partner, or have a larger family, both brands offer products that can adequately meet your needs. Consider factors such as water consumption and available space in your kitchen when choosing the right water filter size for your household.

    Pur Replacement Indicator

Pur filters are designed with user convenience in mind, and many models come equipped with a helpful filter replacement indicator. This indicator takes the guesswork out of determining when it’s time to replace the filter. It can be in the form of an LED light or a digital display that alerts you when the filter is nearing the end of its lifespan. Types of Whole House Water Filters

When it comes to ensuring the quality of your household’s water supply, a whole house water filter is a wise investment. These filters are designed to remove contaminants from the water coming into your home, providing you with clean and safe water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and other daily activities. There are several types of whole house water filters available in the market, each with its own set of advantages and features. Let’s take a closer look at some of the most common types of whole house water filters.

    Activated Carbon Filters

Activated carbon filters are one of the most popular choices when it comes to whole house water filtration, and for good reason. These filters work by adsorbing organic compounds, such as chlorine, pesticides, herbicides, and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), as the water passes through the activated carbon media. Every sip of fresh, clean water is a rejuvenating experience and choosing the right filter can make all the difference. In this article, we will explore various water filters and discover the ultimate solution to combat the challenges of polluted water. So, get ready to quench your thirst for knowledge and embark on a journey towards cleaner, purer hydration.

    Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

Reverse osmosis water filters are a popular choice for individuals looking to have clean and purified drinking water. These filters work by using a semi-permeable membrane to remove impurities from the water. When you turn on the faucet, the water is forced through the membrane, which blocks contaminants such as bacteria, viruses, and chemicals. The filtered water then goes through a separate line, leaving behind the impurities in a concentrated stream of wastewater.

Advantages of Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

One of the main advantages of reverse osmosis water filters is their effectiveness in removing a wide range of contaminants. From heavy metals like lead and mercury to pesticides and other harmful chemicals, reverse osmosis filters excel at providing clean and safe drinking water. Additionally, these filters are capable of removing up to 99% of impurities, ensuring that you and your family have access to high-quality water.

Another advantage of reverse osmosis water filters is their convenience. Most systems can be easily installed under the kitchen sink, allowing you to have access to purified water whenever you need it. These filters also require minimal maintenance, typically only needing the membrane and filters to be replaced every 6 to 12 months.

Disadvantages of Reverse Osmosis Water Filters

While reverse osmosis water filters have numerous benefits, there are also a few drawbacks to consider. One of the main disadvantages is the amount of water wasted during the filtration process. For every gallon of clean water produced, reverse osmosis systems can produce anywhere from 2 to 4 gallons of wastewater. This can be a concern for individuals in areas with limited water supply or those who are trying to conserve water.

Another drawback is the removal of beneficial minerals from the water. Reverse osmosis filters not only eliminate contaminants but also strip away essential minerals like calcium and magnesium. While these minerals can be obtained from other dietary sources, some people prefer drinking water that still contains these minerals for their potential health benefits.

Despite these disadvantages, reverse osmosis water filters remain a popular choice due to their effectiveness in removing contaminants and providing clean drinking water.

    Activated Carbon Filters

Activated carbon filters are another commonly used type of water filter. These filters are designed to adsorb impurities, such as chlorine, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), and certain pesticides. The carbon in these filters has a large porous surface area that allows it to trap and hold onto contaminants, preventing them from passing through.

    Advantages of Activated Carbon Filters

One of the key advantages of activated carbon filters is their ability to improve the taste and odor of water. Chlorine, commonly used in water treatment, can create an unpleasant taste and smell. Activated carbon filters effectively remove chlorine, resulting in water that is more refreshing and enjoyable to drink.

Furthermore, activated carbon filters can remove some heavy metals, including lead, from the water. This makes them a valuable option for areas where the water supply may be contaminated with lead or other toxic metals. By reducing exposure to these harmful substances, activated carbon filters help protect your health and well-being.

    Disadvantages of Activated Carbon Filters

While activated carbon filters offer many benefits, they do have some limitations. These filters are not as effective as reverse osmosis filters in removing certain contaminants, such as dissolved solids, fluoride, and bacteria. If your water source contains high levels of these substances, an activated carbon filter may not provide the level of purification you need.

Another disadvantage is the need for regular filter replacement. Over time, the carbon in the filter becomes saturated with contaminants, reducing its effectiveness. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and replace the filter cartridges at the recommended intervals to maintain optimal filtration.

Despite these limitations, activated carbon filters are an affordable and widely available option for improving the taste and quality of your drinking water.

    Ion Exchange Filters

    Advantages of Ion Exchange Filters

One of the main advantages of ion exchange filters is their ability to remove hardness from water. Hard water is characterized by high levels of minerals like calcium and magnesium. These minerals can cause limescale buildup in pipes and appliances, reducing their lifespan and efficiency. Ion exchange filters exchange the calcium and magnesium ions with sodium or potassium ions, effectively softening the water and preventing the negative effects of hard water.

Ion exchange filters are also effective in removing heavy metals, such as lead and copper, from the water. This makes them a valuable option for individuals living in older homes with plumbing systems that may leach these metals into the water supply.

    Disadvantages of Ion Exchange Filters

One of the disadvantages of ion exchange filters is the increase in sodium or potassium levels in the water. Since these filters replace calcium and magnesium ions with sodium or potassium ions, the filtered water may have elevated levels of these minerals. This can be a concern for individuals on low-sodium or low-potassium diets, or those with certain health conditions that require monitoring of mineral intake.

Additionally, ion exchange filters require regular maintenance and regeneration. The resin bed in the filter needs to be periodically recharged to maintain its effectiveness. This can be done by backwashing the filter or using a brine solution. Failure to properly regenerate the filter can result in reduced performance and decreased lifespan of the filter.

Despite these limitations, ion exchange filters are a popular choice for individuals looking to soften their water and remove specific contaminants.

    Gravity-Fed Water Filters

Gravity-fed water filters are a simple and effective way to purify water without the need for electricity or complicated installation. These filters rely on the force of gravity to push water through a filtration medium, effectively removing impurities.

How do gravity-fed water filters work?

Gravity-fed water filters typically consist of two chambers stacked on top of each other. The upper chamber is filled with unfiltered water, while the lower chamber contains the filtered water. A ceramic or carbon filter cartridge is placed between the two chambers, allowing water to flow through and trapping impurities along the way. As the water slowly drips through the filter cartridge, gravity pulls it downwards, ensuring clean water collects in the lower chamber.

    Advantages of gravity-fed water filters

One of the main advantages of gravity-fed water filters is their ease of use and portability. These filters do not require any power source or complex installation. You can simply fill the upper chamber with water, and gravity will do the rest. This makes them ideal for outdoor activities, camping trips, or as a backup filtration system during emergencies.

Gravity-fed water filters also provide a reliable method for purifying water from various sources, such as rivers, lakes, or wells. The ceramic or carbon filters effectively remove bacteria, parasites, and other contaminants, ensuring that the water you consume is safe and clean.

    Disadvantages of gravity-fed water filters

One major disadvantage of gravity-fed water filters is the slow filtration rate. Due to the reliance on gravity to push water through the filter, the process can be quite slow compared to other filtration methods. This can be a limitation when you need a large volume of filtered water quickly.

Another disadvantage is the limited effectiveness in removing certain contaminants. While gravity-fed water filters are efficient at removing bacteria and sediment, they may not be as effective at removing dissolved chemicals or heavy metals. If your water source contains high levels of these contaminants, you may need to consider additional filtration methods.

Overall, gravity-fed water filters provide a convenient and portable solution for purifying water, especially in situations where access to electricity or plumbing is limited.

    Ultraviolet (UV) Filters

Ultraviolet (UV) filters are a powerful and efficient method for disinfecting water. These filters use UV light to destroy the DNA of microorganisms, rendering them unable to replicate and causing their destruction.

    How do ultraviolet filters work?

Ultraviolet filters utilize a UV lamp that emits UV-C light at a specific wavelength. As water flows through the filter chamber, it is exposed to the UV light for a specific period of time. The UV light penetrates the microorganisms’ cell walls and disrupts their DNA, effectively neutralizing them. The purified water then continues to the outlet, free from harmful bacteria, viruses, and protozoa.

    Advantages of ultraviolet filters

One of the key advantages of UV filters is their effectiveness in destroying a wide range of microorganisms. UV light is able to kill or inactivate bacteria, viruses, and protozoa, including common waterborne pathogens such as E. coli and Giardia. This ensures that the water you drink is safe and free from harmful microorganisms.

UV filters also provide a chemical-free method of disinfection. Unlike other filtration methods that rely on chemical disinfectants, UV filters do not introduce any additional substances into the water. This makes them an excellent choice for individuals who prefer chemical-free water or have sensitivities to certain disinfectants.

    Disadvantages of ultraviolet filters

One of the main drawbacks of UV filters is their inability to remove non-living contaminants. While they effectively neutralize microorganisms, UV filters do not eliminate dissolved chemicals, heavy metals, or sediment. If your water source contains these types of contaminants, you may need to use a combination of UV filtration with another method, such as reverse osmosis or activated carbon, to achieve comprehensive water purification.

Additionally, UV filters require regular maintenance and replacement of the UV lamp. Over time, the intensity of the UV light decreases, reducing the filter’s effectiveness. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommendations and replace the UV lamp at the recommended intervals to maintain optimal performance.

Despite these limitations, UV filters offer a reliable and efficient method for disinfecting water, providing peace of mind regarding microbial contamination.

It is highly effective against a wide range of pathogens, making ozone filters suitable for areas with contaminated water sources or during times of waterborne disease outbreaks.

Ozone filters also offer a chemical-free method of water disinfection. Unlike chlorination, which can introduce potentially harmful byproducts, ozone filters do not produce any harmful residues or chemicals. This makes them a safe and environmentally friendly option for individuals who prefer chemical-free water.

    Disadvantages of ozone filters

One of the major disadvantages of ozone filters is the cost associated with installation and maintenance. Ozone generators can be expensive, and regular maintenance is required to ensure optimal performance. Additionally, ozone filters typically require other additional filtration methods, such as activated carbon filters, to remove any remaining ozone gas or other impurities.

Another drawback is the potential for ozone gas to be released into the air during the ozonation process. Ozone gas, when present in high concentrations, can be harmful to human health and can contribute to air pollution. Proper ventilation and containment measures are necessary to ensure the safety of the ozone filtration system.

Despite these limitations, ozone filters offer a powerful and effective method of water disinfection, providing clean and safe drinking water for various applications.
