In this article, we explore the question: Do water softeners add sodium to drinking water? Many people are concerned about the impact of sodium on their health, especially those with high blood pressure or other medical conditions. We will delve into this topic and provide you with a clear explanation of whether water softeners actually increase sodium levels in your drinking water. So, if you’ve ever wondered about the potential effects of water softeners on the sodium content of your tap water, you’re in the right place.

    Explanation of Water Softeners

    Definition

Water softeners are devices or systems designed to remove minerals, such as calcium and magnesium, from hard water. This process helps to prevent the build-up of mineral deposits in pipes, appliances, and fixtures. The removal of these minerals results in softer water that lathers more easily with soap and reduces the negative effects of hard water.

    Purpose

The main purpose of water softeners is to improve the quality of water by reducing the mineral content, particularly calcium and magnesium ions. By removing these minerals, water softeners aim to extend the lifespan of appliances, reduce mineral build-up, improve water efficiency, and provide other benefits associated with soft water.

    How They Work

Water softeners work through a process called ion exchange. Inside the water softener tank, there are small resin beads that are negatively charged. When hard water enters the tank, the calcium and magnesium ions in the water are attracted to the resin beads and stick to them. At the same time, sodium ions are released from the resin beads into the water. This exchange of ions effectively removes the hardness minerals from the water, replacing them with sodium ions. The softened water is then distributed throughout the plumbing system, ready for use.

    Sodium Content in Water Softeners

    Role of Sodium

Sodium plays a crucial role in the water softening process. As mentioned earlier, water softeners replace calcium and magnesium ions in the water with sodium ions. The sodium ions are what make the water “soft” by preventing the build-up of mineral deposits. In this way, sodium acts as a natural and effective substitute for the hardness minerals.

    Salt-Based Water Softeners

The most common type of water softener is the salt-based water softener. These systems use resin beads along with salt, usually in the form of sodium chloride. The salt is added to a separate brine tank and during the regeneration process, it is mixed with water to create a concentrated saline solution. This solution is then used to clean and recharge the resin beads, flushing away the accumulated hardness minerals and restoring their ability to soften water.

    Amount of Sodium Added

The amount of sodium added to the water during the water softening process depends on the hardness of the incoming water and the specific settings of the water softener. On average, conventional salt-based water softeners may add between 30 to 500 milligrams of sodium per eight-ounce glass of water. This amount can vary based on factors such as water hardness, resin bed size, and regeneration frequency. It is important to note that not all of the sodium used in water softening is present in the softened water. Some remains in the wastewater after the regeneration process.

    Health Concerns

    Sodium Intake Recommendations

While sodium is an essential nutrient for our bodies, excessive intake can lead to health problems such as high blood pressure and heart disease. The American Heart Association recommends limiting sodium intake to no more than 2,300 milligrams per day for most adults, and ideally, less than 1,500 milligrams per day for those with high blood pressure, diabetes, or kidney disease. It is important to consider the amount of sodium consumed from all sources, including water and other foods, to maintain a healthy balance.

    Impact on Blood Pressure

One of the main concerns regarding the sodium content in softened water is its potential impact on blood pressure. High sodium intake has been linked to increased blood pressure, which in turn can increase the risk of heart disease and stroke. However, the amount of sodium added to water through the water softening process is generally considered to be minimal and unlikely to cause significant increases in blood pressure for most individuals. It is important to monitor sodium intake from all sources and consult with a healthcare professional if you have specific health concerns.

    Effect on Heart Health

Although sodium intake from softened water may contribute to overall sodium intake, it is not typically a major contributor to heart health issues. Most of the sodium consumed in a typical diet comes from processed and packaged foods, not from softened water. However, if you have a pre-existing condition such as heart disease or are on a sodium-restricted diet, it is essential to discuss the potential impact of softened water on your specific health situation with your doctor.

    Considerations for Sodium-Restricted Diets

For individuals on sodium-restricted diets, it is crucial to take into account the sodium content in softened water. While the amount of sodium added by water softeners may be low, it can still contribute to overall sodium intake. If you are on a sodium-restricted diet, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare professional to determine the best course of action regarding your water softening options. There are alternative methods available that can soften water without adding sodium, which may be more suitable for individuals with strict dietary restrictions.

    Regulations and Testing

Regulatory Standards for Sodium Levels in Drinking Water

In the United States, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets regulatory standards for drinking water quality, including sodium levels. The EPA has established a secondary maximum contaminant level (SMCL) for sodium at 20 milligrams per liter (mg/L) or 20 parts per million (ppm). While this guideline is not enforceable, it serves as an indicator for the aesthetic rather than health-related effects of sodium in water. It is important to note that the SMCL for sodium is higher than the level typically found in softened water.

    Testing and Monitoring Sodium Content

To ensure compliance with regulatory standards and to provide accurate information to consumers, water softener manufacturers and providers conduct testing and monitoring of sodium content in the softened water. These tests help determine the effectiveness of the water softener in reducing hardness minerals and the amount of sodium added during the softening process. It is essential to choose a reputable water softener provider and consider the results of these tests when making decisions about water softening systems.

    Public Awareness and Education

Public awareness and education programs play a vital role in informing individuals about the sodium content in water softeners and its potential implications for health. Water utilities, health organizations, and environmental agencies often collaborate to promote awareness of water quality, educate consumers about the benefits and risks associated with various water treatment methods, and provide guidance on maintaining a healthy balance of sodium intake. These initiatives help individuals make informed decisions about water softening based on their specific needs and health considerations.

    Alternative Water Softening Methods

    Salt-Free Water Softeners

For individuals concerned about the sodium content in their water, salt-free water softeners offer an alternative option. These systems use various technologies, such as template-assisted crystallization or ceramic media, to prevent the formation of scale and reduce the effects of hard water without adding sodium. While salt-free water softeners may not completely remove hardness minerals like traditional salt-based systems, they can be a suitable choice for those who want to avoid additional sodium intake.

    Ion Exchange Resins

In addition to salt-based water softeners, there are also non-salt-based systems that use alternative ion exchange resins. These resins are designed to selectively remove only calcium and magnesium ions, leaving the sodium ions in the water. This allows for the reduction of hardness minerals without adding sodium during the softening process. While these systems are less common and may require a higher initial investment, they can be an effective option for those concerned about sodium intake.

    Electromagnetic Water Softeners

Another alternative method for water softening is electromagnetic or electronic water softeners. These devices use magnetic or electronic fields to alter the structure of the minerals in the water, preventing them from depositing and causing scale. Unlike traditional water softeners, electromagnetic systems do not remove hardness minerals or add sodium to the water. While the effectiveness of these devices may vary, they can be a suitable option for individuals who want to avoid the use of chemicals or additional sodium.

    Reverse Osmosis Systems

Reverse osmosis systems are commonly used for water purification and can also help reduce water hardness. These systems use a semi-permeable membrane to remove a wide range of impurities, including hardness minerals and sodium ions, from the water. As a result, reverse osmosis systems produce soft water that is free from excessive sodium content. However, it is important to note that reverse osmosis systems require regular maintenance and may be more expensive compared to other water softening methods.

    Choosing the Right Water Softener

    Considering Sodium Levels

When choosing a water softener, considering the sodium levels is important, especially for individuals with specific dietary restrictions or health concerns. It is crucial to assess the sodium content added by the water softener and compare it to individual dietary needs and recommended sodium intake guidelines. Understanding the potential health implications and discussing them with a healthcare professional can help in making an informed decision.

    Personal Health Factors

In addition to sodium levels, personal health factors should be taken into consideration when selecting a water softener. Individuals with high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney conditions, or other health issues may require additional precautions or may benefit from alternative water softening methods that do not add sodium to the water. Consulting with a healthcare professional can provide valuable insights and guidance in selecting the right water softener for individual health needs.

    Water Quality Factors

The hardness of the water supply should also be considered when choosing a water softener. Hardness refers to the concentration of calcium and magnesium ions in the water, and it can vary significantly depending on the source. Understanding the hardness level of the water can help determine the appropriate size and type of water softener needed to effectively remove the hardness minerals while minimizing the sodium added.

    Cost and Maintenance

Cost and maintenance requirements are important factors to consider when choosing a water softener. Salt-based water softeners generally have lower upfront costs but require regular maintenance, including adding salt to the brine tank and occasional resin bed cleaning or replacement. Alternative water softening methods, such as salt-free systems or reverse osmosis, may have higher initial costs but can offer lower maintenance and operating expenses in the long run. Evaluating both the initial investment and ongoing maintenance costs can help make a decision based on individual budget and preferences.

    Benefits of Water Softeners

    Reduced Mineral Build-Up

One of the primary benefits of water softeners is the reduction of mineral build-up in pipes, appliances, and fixtures. Hard water contains dissolved calcium and magnesium ions that can precipitate and form scale over time. This scale can reduce water flow, clog pipes, and reduce the efficiency of appliances like water heaters and dishwashers. By removing these minerals, water softeners help prevent scale formation, thus extending the lifespan and improving the performance of plumbing systems and appliances.

    Extended Appliance Lifespan

Water softeners can significantly extend the lifespan of appliances that come into contact with water, such as washing machines, dishwashers, and coffee makers. The reduced mineral content in softened water prevents the deposition and accumulation of scale in these appliances, reducing the likelihood of costly repairs or premature replacements. By protecting appliances from the damaging effects of hard water, water softeners can save homeowners money in the long run.

    Improved Water Efficiency

Hard water can also reduce the efficiency of water-consuming appliances and fixtures. The build-up of mineral deposits can decrease the flow rate of faucets and showerheads, resulting in less efficient water use. Water softeners help maintain optimal water flow by preventing the formation of scale, ensuring efficient water usage and reducing water waste. This benefit is not only environmentally friendly but also results in lower water bills for homeowners.

    Softer Skin and Hair

One of the most noticeable benefits of using softened water is its effect on skin and hair. Hard water can leave a residue on the skin, leading to dryness, itchiness, and irritation. It can also cause hair to become dull, brittle, and harder to manage. Softened water, on the other hand, is gentler on the skin and hair, allowing natural oils to remain intact and providing a smoother and more moisturizing experience. Many individuals notice an improvement in the texture and appearance of their skin and hair after switching to softened water.

    Disadvantages of Water Softeners

    Increased Sodium Content

The main disadvantage associated with water softeners is the increased sodium content in the softened water. As mentioned earlier, salt-based water softeners replace calcium and magnesium ions with sodium ions during the ion exchange process. While the amount of sodium added may be minimal, it can contribute to overall sodium intake, particularly for individuals on sodium-restricted diets or with specific health concerns. It is essential to consider this potential impact on health when deciding to use a salt-based water softener.

    Potential Health Risks

The increased sodium content in softened water may pose potential health risks for individuals with certain health conditions. As discussed earlier, excessive sodium intake can lead to high blood pressure, heart disease, and other health problems. The impact of softened water on sodium intake varies depending on the specific circumstances and dietary needs of each individual. It is important to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and recommendations.

    Environmental Impact

Another consideration regarding water softeners is their environmental impact. Salt-based water softeners require the regular addition of salt to the brine tank, which may contribute to increased sodium in wastewater and potentially affect aquatic environments. Additionally, the regeneration process of salt-based systems can consume significant amounts of water and energy. Environmentally conscious consumers may prefer alternative water softening methods that do not rely on salt and have less of an ecological footprint.

    Increased Cost

Water softeners, especially those utilizing salt-based systems, can involve additional costs compared to using untreated water. The upfront and ongoing expenses associated with purchasing and maintaining a water softener should be factored into the decision-making process. Although the potential long-term savings from increased appliance lifespan and improved water efficiency may offset these costs, it is important to consider the financial implications before investing in a water softener.

    Mitigating Sodium in Softened Water

    Flushing Taps

One way to reduce the sodium content in softened water is by flushing the taps. Flushing the taps for a short period of time, usually a few seconds, before using the water can help remove stagnant water that may have higher sodium concentrations. This practice is particularly relevant for drinking water or water used for cooking, where minimizing sodium intake is a priority. Flushing taps can be a simple and effective method to reduce sodium exposure.

    Point-of-Use Filtration

Another option for mitigating sodium in softened water is using point-of-use filtration systems. These systems, such as under-sink filters or countertop filters, are designed to remove impurities, including sodium, from the water right before consumption. Point-of-use filtration can be an ideal solution for individuals with specific dietary restrictions or health concerns who want to have control over the sodium content in their drinking water.

    Drinking Bottled Water

For individuals who are particularly concerned about sodium intake from softened water, drinking bottled water can be an option. Bottled water brands often provide information about the sodium content on their labels, allowing consumers to choose options with lower sodium levels. It is important to note that reliance on bottled water may have additional cost and sustainability considerations, so individuals should carefully evaluate the trade-offs before making this choice.

    Softening Only Hot Water

In certain cases, such as laundry or cleaning, softened water may not be necessary. One approach to mitigating sodium in softened water is to connect the water softener in a way that only softens the hot water supply. By diverting the cold water supply directly to the cold water taps, individuals can have access to unsoftened water for drinking and other purposes where sodium intake needs to be minimized. This solution allows for a balance between the benefits of soft water and the control of sodium intake.

    Conclusion

In summary, water softeners are designed to remove mineral content, particularly calcium and magnesium, from hard water. This process provides various benefits such as extended appliance lifespan, reduced mineral build-up, improved water efficiency, and softer skin and hair. However, water softeners can add sodium to the water, which may be a concern for individuals on sodium-restricted diets or with specific health conditions. It is important to consider the sodium content in softened water, balance the potential health risks, and explore alternative water softening methods that minimize sodium intake. By understanding the sodium levels, evaluating personal health factors and water quality, considering cost and maintenance, and implementing mitigation strategies, individuals can make informed decisions about water softeners that best meet their needs while maintaining a healthy balance of sodium intake.

Frizzlife PD600-TAM3 Review: 600 GPD Tankless RO, and What “NSF/ANSI 58” Means Here

This page contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Affiliate disclosure.

How this review was put together: from Frizzlife’s product page, its PD600-TAM3 test-report leaflet, NSF International’s public listings and public notices (links in “Sources” at the end). We have not tested this system ourselves. How we review. Last checked October 28, 2026.

    The short version

The Frizzlife PD600-TAM3 is a tankless under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system. An electric booster pump pushes water through a 600-gallon-per-day membrane on demand, so there is no storage tank, the flow at the faucet is fast (Frizzlife quotes 0.41 gallons per minute), and Frizzlife claims a 2:1 pure-to-drain ratio. A third cartridge, the TAM3, adds minerals back for taste, and a display shows the output TDS and filter life.

The thing to understand before buying: the listing’s “NSF/ANSI 58&53&42&372” wording describes lab tests run to those standards’ methods, not certification. We found no NSF, WQA or IAPMO certification for its contaminant reduction. The only certification Frizzlife’s own leaflet cites is IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 372, which covers the lead content of the materials, not what the system removes.

See the Frizzlife PD600-TAM3 on Amazon

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

    A good fit if you

    • Are short on cabinet space and don’t want a storage tank.
    • Fill kettles, pots or bottles often and want fast RO flow.
    • Care about water waste and like the idea of a 2:1 ratio rather than the much higher drain rates of most tank systems.
    • Have an outlet under the sink (or can add one).
    • Are on city (municipal) water. That is the water source Frizzlife’s manual lists.

Probably not the right pick if you

    • Need a certified claim for lead, arsenic, fluoride or PFAS for a specific health concern. Choose a system with an NSF, WQA or IAPMO listing for that claim (see alternatives).
    • Have no power under the sink, or want a system that works in a power cut. With no tank, there is no stored water when the pump can’t run.
    • Are bothered by appliance noise. A booster pump runs whenever water is being made.
    • Are on untreated well water. Frizzlife lists municipal water as the applicable source.

    Key specifications

From Frizzlife’s product page and PD600-TAM3 manual. Production, flow and drain ratio are the maker’s figures, not certified ones.

Spec PD600-TAM3 What it means in practice
Type Tankless under-sink RO with booster pump Makes water on demand; needs an outlet.
Cartridges Composite sediment + carbon block (ASR211), 600 GPD RO membrane, TAM3 alkaline remineralization filter Frizzlife calls it “8-stage” by counting layers inside the cartridges.
Rated production 600 gallons per day A maker rating. Cold water and low pressure reduce it.
Flow rate 0.41 gallons per minute Frizzlife says about 10 seconds to fill a 330 ml cup.
Pure-to-drain ratio 2:1 (maker claim) Far less waste than most non-pumped tank systems, if it holds in your home.
Working pressure 20–80 psi The pump means it copes with lower house pressure than non-pumped RO.
    Water temperature 39–100°F
    Power 110–240 V AC, 85 W rated Plug-in power supply.
    Size Main unit 5.3 × 14.7 × 15.5 in; TAM3 5 × 5 × 13.5 in No tank to find room for.
Monitoring Display shows output TDS and filter life Frizzlife says the TAM3 adds 10–30 ppm to TDS, so a handheld meter after the TAM3 reads higher than the display.

    Certification: what was verified

Status: not certified for contaminant reduction (as of 28 Oct 2026). Here is what we found:

    • NSF International: a search of NSF’s drinking-water listings for “Frizzlife” and for “PD600” returned no matching products. NSF also has a public notice dated August 25, 2023 stating that “Frizzlife is not certified by NSF and may not use the NSF certification mark or make any claims of NSF certification.” That notice was about a different Frizzlife product (the SW15), but it applies to the company.
    • What Frizzlife publishes: its leaflet for the PD600-TAM3 says “Testing performed under NSF/ANSI standards 42&53&58” by the SGS lab, and lists results for TDS (96.76% reduction in that test), lead, arsenic, fluoride, nitrate, PFOA, PFOS and others. The only certification it names is IAPMO R&T to NSF/ANSI 372 for low lead content.

What that does and doesn’t tell you:

    • A lab test is not certification. Certification means an accredited certifier (NSF, WQA or IAPMO R&T) tested the system, audits the factory and re-tests over time, and publishes a listing you can check. A single lab report commissioned by the maker isn’t the same, even when the lab follows the standard’s method.
    • The results are still plausible. RO membranes generally reduce TDS, lead, fluoride, arsenic (V) and PFAS well, and the EPA lists RO as effective for PFAS. The point is that nobody independent is vouching for this particular product.
    • NSF/ANSI 372 is about materials. It shows the parts in contact with water meet lead-content rules. It says nothing about removing lead from your water.
    • The display helps. A live TDS reading is a reasonable everyday check that the membrane is working, even without certification.

What we like and what to weigh up

    Strengths

    • No tank, so it saves cabinet space and there is no storage tank to sanitize.
    • Fast flow at the faucet, thanks to the pump.
    • Low claimed waste (2:1 pure-to-drain).
    • Works at lower pressure (from 20 psi) than non-pumped systems.
    • Twist-off cartridges and a TDS and filter-life display.

    Drawbacks

    • No contaminant-reduction certification, despite the NSF/ANSI numbers in the listing title.
    • Needs electricity, and makes no water in a power cut.
    • Pump noise while it runs.
    • Proprietary cartridges from one maker.
    • Higher pH is a taste choice, not a health benefit. Frizzlife’s marketing calls weakly alkaline water “beneficial to your health”; that isn’t an established finding.

    Maintenance and running costs

    Cartridge Replace
ASR211 composite (sediment + carbon) Every 12 months, sooner with poor feed water
600 GPD RO membrane About every 24 months, or when the display’s TDS rises
TAM3 remineralization filter About every 12 months

What drives the cost: the yearly composite and TAM3 cartridges, and a membrane every couple of years. The display’s filter-life countdown is a guide; the output TDS reading is the better sign the membrane is wearing out. Prices change often, so check the current cost of a year’s cartridges before you buy.

    Alternatives worth comparing

    Common questions

Is the Frizzlife PD600 NSF certified?

No. NSF’s listings show no Frizzlife products, and NSF has published a notice that Frizzlife may not claim NSF certification. The PD600-TAM3 was lab-tested by SGS using NSF/ANSI methods, and is certified only to NSF/ANSI 372 (lead content of materials) by IAPMO R&T, according to Frizzlife’s leaflet.

Does it work with a fridge or ice maker?

Frizzlife’s product page doesn’t cover this. With no tank, the pump has to start every time the fridge or ice maker draws water, so ask Frizzlife about its recommended setup before you plumb one in.

Does a tankless RO system really waste less water?

Pumped tankless systems generally send less water to the drain than non-pumped tank systems, because the pump raises the pressure across the membrane. The 2:1 figure is Frizzlife’s own and isn’t certified.

  • Whirlpool WHER25 Review: NSF-Certified RO for Lead, Fluoride and Arsenic

Whirlpool WHER25 Review: NSF-Certified RO for Lead, Fluoride and Arsenic

This page contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Affiliate disclosure.

How this review was put together: from NSF International’s public certification listing, Whirlpool’s performance data sheet and the WHER25 owner’s manual (links in “Sources” at the end). We have not tested this system ourselves. How we review. Last checked October 28, 2026.

    The short version

The Whirlpool WHER25 is a simple three-cartridge under-sink reverse osmosis (RO) system with a storage tank: a combined sediment/carbon pre-filter, an RO membrane and a carbon post-filter, all in twist-in “UltraEase” cartridges under a cover. A light in the faucet base flashes amber when six months are up.

Its strongest point is the paperwork. NSF International lists the WHER25 under NSF/ANSI 58 with certified claims for lead, fluoride, arsenic (pentavalent), barium, cadmium, both forms of chromium, copper, cysts, nitrate/nitrite, radium, selenium, TDS and turbidity, plus NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine taste and odor. Its weak points are a low daily output (NSF lists 14.76 gallons per day), a lot of water to the drain, and twice-yearly filter changes.

See the Whirlpool WHER25 on Amazon

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

    A good fit if you

    • Want a certified claim for lead, fluoride, arsenic (V) or nitrate from a certifier you can look up yourself.
    • Drink and cook with a modest amount of RO water (one to three people is a sensible guide at about 15 gallons a day).
    • Want filter changes that need no tools and no housing wrench.
    • Prefer a widely sold brand whose replacement cartridges are easy to find in stores.

Probably not the right pick if you

    • Have water harder than 10 grains per gallon, or any iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide, without treatment ahead of it. Those are the manual’s feed-water limits.
    • Need a lot of RO water, or want to run a fridge and ice maker off it as well.
    • Care about water waste. Its efficiency rating is about 11%, so roughly eight gallons go to the drain for every gallon of drinking water under typical use.
    • Are on chloraminated city water and rely on the arsenic claim (see below).

    Key specifications

From the WHER25 owner’s manual and performance data sheet, with NSF’s certified production figure.

Spec WHER25 What it means in practice
Type Under-sink RO with storage tank, no pump Runs on house pressure. A battery powers only the faucet’s reminder light.
Cartridges Pre-filter (sediment + carbon) WHEERF, RO membrane WHEERM, carbon post-filter (WHEERF set) The pre- and post-filter come as a pair.
Certified daily production 14.76 gallons per day (NSF listing; tested at 50 psi, 77°F, 750 ppm TDS) Low compared with “75 GPD” systems, though those figures are often membrane ratings, not certified output. An older data sheet lists 18.46 gpd.
Efficiency rating 10.6% (manual); 12.22% on the older data sheet Most of the water entering the system goes to the drain.
TDS reduction (test) 90.6% average, 86.5% minimum A solid result for a basic RO system.
Feed pressure 40–100 psi The nitrate/nitrite claim only applies at 40 psi or more.
    Feed water temperature 40–100°F
    Max feed TDS 2,000 mg/L
Max hardness 10 gpg at pH 6.9 Soften first if you are above it.
Iron, manganese, hydrogen sulfide 0 mg/L Well water with any of these needs treatment first.
Feed pH 4–10 Membrane life is shorter at high pH (see maintenance).
Warranty 1-year limited (owner’s manual) Cartridges are not covered.

    Certification: what was verified

Status: Certified. NSF International’s listing for “Whirlpool WHER25” (listed company: Water Channel Partners) shows:

    • NSF/ANSI 58 (reverse osmosis), daily production rate 14.76 gpd, with reduction claims for arsenic (pentavalent), barium, cadmium, hexavalent and trivalent chromium, copper, cysts, fluoride, lead, nitrate/nitrite, radium 226/228, selenium, TDS and turbidity. Replacement modules WHEERF and WHEERM.
    • NSF/ANSI 42 for chlorine reduction and taste and odor reduction, with a 3,850-gallon rated service cycle for the WHEERF filter.
    • It is also listed to CSA B483.1 and meets NSF/ANSI 372 for lead content.

NSF listing for the WHER25 (checked 28 Oct 2026).

What that does and doesn’t tell you:

    • It does confirm a broad set of health-related claims for the complete system, tested by NSF.
    • Arsenic comes with conditions. The claim is for pentavalent arsenic only, and the manual says to rely on it only on water with a detectable free chlorine residual. Chloramine isn’t enough to convert arsenic to the form RO removes well.
    • No PFAS claim. The WHER25 isn’t certified for PFOA/PFOS. RO in general reduces PFAS well according to the EPA, but if PFAS is your main concern, a system with a certified PFOA/PFOS claim, such as the AquaTru Under Sink, is the safer buy.
    • Not for water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality. The cyst claim means it can be used on disinfected water that may contain cysts.

What we like and what to weigh up

    Strengths

    • A broad NSF-listed claim set for the complete system, including cysts, fluoride and lead.
    • Tool-free cartridges that twist out under a cover, with no housings to unscrew or O-rings to grease.
    • A built-in reminder: the faucet light flashes amber at six months.
    • A nitrate/nitrite test kit is supplied, so you can check that claim at home.
    • Easy to find replacement parts in big-box stores as well as online.

    Drawbacks

    • Low output. About 15 gallons a day in certification testing, and less on cold winter water or low pressure.
    • High water waste for every gallon produced, as the efficiency rating shows.
    • Frequent filter changes: the manual says every six months for the pre- and post-filter.
    • Strict feed limits: 10 gpg hardness and zero iron, manganese or sulfide.
    • No remineralization stage. The water will taste like plain RO water, which some people find flat.

    Maintenance and running costs

    From the WHER25 owner’s manual:

    Part Replace Note
Pre-filter and post-filter (WHEERF) At least every 6 months, sooner if output slows Change the faucet battery at the same time.
RO membrane (WHEERM) When output or taste drops The manual says “well over one year” at feed pH 6.8–7.7, and as little as 6 months at pH 8.5–10.
Whole system Sanitize yearly Whirlpool recommends its reusable sanitizing kit (sold separately).

What drives the cost: two WHEERF sets a year, plus a membrane every year or two depending on your water’s pH. Check the current price of a WHEERF pair and a WHEERM membrane and compare a three-year total with the alternatives below. Prices change often, so we don’t quote them here. A TDS meter is a cheap way to tell when the membrane is wearing out.

    Alternatives worth comparing

    • Want a certified PFOA/PFOS claim as well? The AquaTru Under Sink is certified by IAPMO R&T (not NSF): lead and fluoride under NSF/ANSI 58 (file W-10194), VOCs and PFOA/PFOS under NSF/ANSI 53 (file W-10193), and microplastics under NSF/ANSI 401 (file W-10195), with the same 10 gpg hardness limit.
    • Want a broad NSF-listed claim set with standard-size housings? See the iSpring RCC7AK-BLK.
    • Want generic 10-inch filters? The APEC ROES-PH75 uses standard housings, though its WQA certification covers TDS only.
    • Comparing them all: see our best under-sink reverse osmosis systems guide.

    Common questions

Is the WHER25 the same as the Kenmore and EcoPure RO systems?

The WHER25 is made and warranted by Water Channel Partners, which also makes Kenmore- and EcoPure-branded water products. Similar-looking systems from those brands are separate models with their own listings, so check the NSF listing for the exact model you buy.

Can I use it on well water?

Only if the water is microbiologically safe and within the limits: no iron, manganese or hydrogen sulfide, and hardness of 10 gpg or less. The arsenic claim also needs a free chlorine residual. Get the well tested first.

Will it remove the sodium from softened water?

Yes, reducing dissolved solids such as sodium is what RO does, and running it after a softener also solves the hardness limit. See how to remove sodium from softened water.

APEC ROES-PHUV75 Review: Alkaline RO With a UV Stage, and What Isn’t Certified

This page contains affiliate links. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. Affiliate disclosure.

How this review was put together: from APEC’s product page and the ROES-PHUV75 owner’s manual, and the Water Quality Association’s and NSF’s public certification listings (links in “Sources” at the end). We have not tested this system ourselves. How we review. Last checked October 28, 2026.

    The short version

The ROES-PHUV75 is APEC’s ROES-PH75 with one extra stage: an ultraviolet (UV) lamp after the RO membrane. Otherwise it is the same design: three pre-filters, a 75-gallon-per-day membrane, a 4-gallon storage tank, a carbon polishing filter and a calcite stage that raises the pH and adds a little calcium for taste. The UV lamp needs an electrical outlet under the sink and a new bulb every year.

The detail that matters most: the ROES-PHUV75 has no certification listing. Its sibling, the ROES-PH75, is WQA-certified to NSF/ANSI 58 (for TDS only). The UV version isn’t on WQA’s APEC listing or in NSF’s directory, and the UV stage has no certification of its own. Its contaminant and “99.99% of bacteria” claims are APEC’s.

See the APEC ROES-PHUV75 on Amazon

Our take: on chlorinated city water, the UV stage adds cost, a power cord and a yearly bulb for little practical gain, and you give up the certified model. It makes more sense as an extra safeguard where the water is already safe but you want an extra layer for stored RO water. It is not a fix for an untreated or contaminated well (see below).

Who it suits, and who should look elsewhere

    A good fit if you

    • Want APEC’s standard-size housings and remineralized RO water, and like the idea of a UV stage as an extra layer.
    • Have incoming pressure of about 50 psi or more and an outlet under the sink.
    • Are happy to rely on the maker’s data rather than a certification listing.

Probably not the right pick if you

    • Want a certified system. Choose the ROES-PH75 (TDS) or a system with broader certified claims (see alternatives).
    • Need to make unsafe water safe. APEC’s own manual says not to use the system on water that is microbiologically unsafe or of unknown quality without adequate disinfection. A whole-house disinfection system, chosen after a lab test, is the right tool for that.
    • Have low pressure (under about 40 psi). APEC recommends a pumped model.

    Key specifications

From APEC’s product page and the ROES-PHUV75 owner’s manual.

Spec ROES-PHUV75 What it means in practice
Type Under-sink RO with storage tank, no pump, UV stage Water production runs on house pressure; only the UV lamp needs power.
Stages Sediment, carbon block, carbon block, RO membrane, UV, coconut-shell carbon post-filter, calcite pH filter
Membrane rating 75 gallons per day at 60 psi, 77°F A membrane rating, not certified output. For comparison, the certified ROES-PH75 produced 27.9 gpd in WQA’s test.
Tank 4 gallon total volume Usable water depends on pressure (next table).
    Feed pressure 40–85 psi
Feed water temperature 40–100°F, cold line only
    Max feed TDS 2,000 ppm
    Feed pH 2.0–11.0
System size 15.5 × 5.25 × 18.5 in; tank about 11 × 11 × 15 in Plus room for the UV transformer near an outlet.
Warranty 1-year limited (owner’s manual) Check APEC’s current terms when you buy.

How full the tank gets at different water pressures

APEC’s manual gives these figures for its non-pumped systems with the 4-gallon tank:

Your incoming pressure Approximate water in tank
70 psi or more about 3.1 gallons (nearly full)
    60 psi about 2.8 gallons
    50 psi about 2.5 gallons
40 psi about 1.9 gallons (around half)

Delivery pressure also falls as the tank empties, from about 50 psi with 3 gallons stored to 5 psi when empty. APEC says an ice maker needing 20–30 psi needs at least 50 psi coming into the system.

    Certification: what was verified

Status: not certified. On October 28, 2026:

    • WQA’s listing for APEC Water Systems covers the RO-90, RO-Hi, RO-PH90, ROES-100, ROES-50 and ROES-PH75. The ROES-PHUV75 is not listed. WQA listing for APEC Water Systems.
    • NSF’s drinking-water directory returned no match for “ROES-PHUV75”.
    • The UV stage has no listing under NSF/ANSI 55, the standard for UV systems. APEC’s statement that the UV stage “destroys up to 99.99%” of bacteria and viruses is the maker’s own claim.

What that means: the membrane, housings and pre-filters are the same parts as the WQA-certified ROES-PH75, so it is reasonable to expect similar RO performance. But no certifier has tested this configuration, and there is no certified claim for anything beyond what the ROES-PH75 carries, which is TDS only.

What we like and what to weigh up

    Strengths

    • Standard 10-inch pre-filters, shared with the rest of APEC’s Essence range.
    • Copes with tough feed water: up to 2,000 ppm TDS and a wide pH range.
    • Remineralizing stage for people who find plain RO water flat.
    • A detailed manual with pressure tables, a filter schedule and troubleshooting.

    Drawbacks

    • No certification, unlike its non-UV sibling.
    • Needs power under the sink, and APEC says to leave the UV lamp on all the time.
    • The first cup can be warm. APEC’s manual notes that water sitting in the UV chamber heats up when the system is idle.
    • Pressure-sensitive, like any non-pumped tank RO system.
    • Water waste. APEC doesn’t publish an efficiency rating for this model.

    Maintenance and running costs

APEC’s schedule, from the ROES-PHUV75 manual:

    Stage Part Replace
1–3 pre-filters FILTER-SET-ES Every 6–12 months (sooner on well water with sediment)
4 membrane MEM-ES-75 City water: every 2–4 years. Well water: about every 2 years
5 UV bulb UVBULB-SS (4-pin) Every 12 months; the bulb weakens after a year even if it still lights
6 post-carbon FI-ES-TCR-QC Every 2–4 years; APEC suggests changing it with the membrane
    7 pH / mineral FI-PHPLUS-QC (calcite) Every 6–12 months
Housing O-rings — Yearly, or with each pre-filter change. APEC suggests new pre-filter housings every 5 years.

What drives the cost: the same as the ROES-PH75 plus a UV bulb every year. Compare a three-year total for both models before deciding the UV stage is worth it. Prices change often, so we don’t quote them here.

    Alternatives worth comparing

    Common questions

Does the UV stage make well water safe to drink?

Not on its own, and APEC doesn’t say it does: its manual says not to use the system on microbiologically unsafe water or water of unknown quality without adequate disinfection. Test the well first. If bacteria are a problem, treat all the water coming into the house, not just one tap.

    Does it remove PFAS?

RO is one of the technologies the EPA found can greatly reduce PFAS, but this model has no certified PFAS claim. See is there a water filter that removes forever chemicals?

    Is the water “alkaline water”?

The calcite stage raises the pH and adds a little calcium for taste. APEC doesn’t publish an output pH, and it isn’t the same as an ionizer.

    Why Consider This Product?

If you’re looking for a top-of-the-line whole house water filtration system, the PRO+AQUA Elite Series GEN2 PRO-100-E is the perfect choice for you. With its three-stage filtration process, this system provides optimal performance and protection. The second stage, known as CRK, utilizes a proprietary blend of medias to eliminate heavy metals like lead, iron, mercury, nickel, chromium, and other dissolved metals. It also tackles odors caused by hydrogen sulfide, inhibits bacteria and algae growth, and prolongs the lifespan of household appliances. The third and final stage, ACB, features an activated coconut shell carbon-infused filter with a maximized surface area to capture large amounts of impurities as small as 5 microns. This stage effectively removes chlorine, volatile organic chemicals (VOCs), pesticides, bad odors, bad taste, and other common water contaminants.

    What It’s Used For

Ensuring Clean Water Throughout Your Home

The PRO+AQUA Elite Series GEN2 PRO-100-E is specifically designed to deliver high-quality filtered water to every outlet in your home, making it an essential addition to your household. By removing chlorine, VOCs, odors, and contaminants, this water filtration system ensures that you have access to clean and safe water for drinking, cooking, bathing, and other everyday activities.

Prolonging the Lifespan of Household Appliances

In addition to providing clean and safe water, the PRO-100-E also helps protect and prolong the lifespan of your household appliances. The CRK filter inhibits bacteria and algae growth, preventing potential damage to appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers, and water heaters. By reducing the presence of heavy metals and other dissolved metals, this system helps maintain the efficiency and longevity of your appliances.

    Easy Maintenance and Cost-Effective

Unlike other water filtration systems, the PRO-100-E does not require regeneration, backwash, draining, or electricity. With its simple maintenance requirements, this system is cost-effective and easy to maintain. Replace the filters every six months to ensure the best filtration and flow rate, ensuring that the system continues to deliver clean and safe water.

    Bottom line

The PRO-100-E is a three-stage whole-house filter (sediment, the CRK heavy-metal stage and a coconut-carbon stage) aimed at homes with 1 to 3 bathrooms on city or well water. Everything above comes from Pro+Aqua’s own product information: the 99% chlorine and VOC figures, the six-month filter changes and the 5-year warranty are the maker’s claims, and we have not tested this system. We have not yet checked it against the NSF, WQA or IAPMO certification listings, so look for a listing before relying on any contaminant-reduction claim, and get a water test first if you are on a well.
